Pursuing his word
Studying your bible
There are many different ways that people study their Bibles. We have created a resource to help you called the pursuit method, it is based on the inductive method of study. If you want to read more about the inductive method, click here.
The Pursuit Method
Pray for divine help.
We need God’s help to understand, apply, and live out the truth of scripture, so we begin by petitioning our Father to speak to us through his Word.
Understand the truth about scripture.
Remind yourself that God’s word is inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17), living (Hebrews 4:12), understandable (1 Corinthians 2:12), and instructive (Romans 15:4).
Read a portion of Scripture.
While single verses can be inspiring, they can be misleading without the context. For this reason, larger portions of scripture are more beneficial for studying. Most modern translations include paragraphs that follow the original language flow and thought. Try to study whole paragraphs, chapters, or entire encounters as a whole.
Seek to understand what you have read.
A good way to do this is to use the inductive method of Observation and Interpretation. Ask questions that will help you understand the scripture better. Who is the author? Who was the original audience? What is the general tone of the text? Go deeper. Are there words you do not understand or recognize? Consult a good Bible dictionary or use a program like Blueletterbible.com to dig into the passage in order to understand what the author is communicating.
Utilize the truth in your life.
Having worked to understand what the author is saying, how does it directly relate to your life? Is there a command to obey? Is there a sin expressed that you struggle with? Is there an example to follow?
Employ practical steps to live it out.
What is one action you can take today to align your life with the truth of scripture? What is one thought you need to hold on to this week from this passage?
