Membership Matters

The what, why, and how of membership here at EBC.

What is church membership?

We believe for membership to matter it must be marked by at least three things.

  • It must represent a committed relationship with other believers.

  • It must be with a clearly defined group of believers.

  • It must be voluntarily involuntary. (While membership is voluntary, the requirements and responsibilities are not negotiable.)

Here at EBC we practice what is called covenant membership. In addition to your profession of faith, we ask that our members agree to our statement of faith and sign a covenant outlining the responsibilities of a covenant member.

Why church membership?

The New Testament is full of commands for the Christian in regard to 'one another'. While some of those have all people in view, many are written with a specific 'one other' in mind. Someone who is a fellow believer, whom you regularly gather with, and to whom you bear a unique responsibility. We believe membership in a local body of believers is in mind here, even if the word 'membership' is not used in the New Testament. You can call it whatever you want, membership, partnership, or something altogether different, but the New Testament assumes some form of committed, accountable belonging as a reality for every true follower of Jesus Christ.

How do I become a member?

We ask all potential new members or those curious about membership to attend our Membership Matters class. It is a four week class held regularly throughout the year on Sunday mornings at 9:30am. You can see the next scheduled class and register by using the button below.

After the class, we will schedule a meeting with one of our pastors to get to know you better.
Once you have completed the class and met with one of our pastors, your name will be put forth at our next regularly scheduled member's meeting for our congregation to vote on receiving you as a new member.
